About Us

Our Clinic

The Rural Lung unit is a Specialist  Respiratory Clinic  situated in the City of  Wagga Wagga ,New South Wales Australia. We serve the  people of  Wagga Wagga and the greater Riverina area. We aim to treat lung diseases,Lung cancer and general infections in the  Bush.

A/Prof Adriaan Venter

Is a Respiratory and Sleep Physician that trained in South Africa at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town and The UCT Lung institute. He holds certification in General Medicine, Respiratory and intensive Care ,Tropical Infectious diseases,Emergency medicine,Hyperbaric and Underwater medicine and Diagnostic Ultra Sound.He is a senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales Rural medical school in Wagga Wagga .

Dr Helen Boland

Is a Respiratory Physician qualified in Australia.She has trained in General Respiratory and Sleep Medice  initially in Melbourne and then  completed her advanced training  at the Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital

We treat patients with lung conditions such as Asthma, Emphysema ,Bronchiectasis,Lung fibrosis ,Lung cancer .Our diagnostic services include a full lung function laboratory  and Bronchoscopy at The Wagga Wagga Rural referral hospital. For Sleep studies we utilise the  Private Sleep Laboratory at calvary Hospital.

How do we diagnose Lung Cancer? In general a Chest X-ray is the starting point . This is followed by a  CT scan of the chest  and then a biopsy  to confirm the type of cancer.
